The Ski & Snowboard Kinja.

Hello people of powder forward and oppo. I present to you my abridged season in review. I do anticipate many more days this season ski touring at the resort now that they are closed but now is a good time for a season recap.

Vertical* due to early closure I estimate that we all would have added about 100,000 vertical to our season totals if the resort was open to April 6 as planned. I typically log 500,00-600,000 vert over 40-50 days on the slopes as recorded by the resorts pass scanners. This season I skied exclusively at Whitefish Mountain Resort in Whitefish Montana. I live about 15 minutes from the resort so access to the resort for me is very easy. If conditions are lousy I don’t feel bad doing one run and going home.

New gear:

1. New POC goggles, hella nice.

2. Complete AT set up, atomic backland skis, skins, Marker kingpin bindings and Salomon QST boots. Used it once already and am very happy.

3. New Technical Mach 1 boots. I got these in October and am very happy with them. A little shop work and I can wear them all day without too much discomfort.

Old gear:

Still skiing my 187 Blizzard Bonafide for hard snow days and my 189 Head Kore05's for soft snow days. I love this quiver. The Bonafides are a burly ass ski that just kills hard snow, while the Heads are precise and super fun off pist.

Things I tried:

I skied two days on some Blizzard Rustler 10's. Really liked them but not enough to change up the quiver. They manage to slot nicely between the Kore’s and the Bonafide’s.

Skills/Runs etc.

On Pist: Really worked on carving,I feel like I’m getting a nice low angle carve down now especially if conditions are good. My bonafids and Head Kore’s have about the same side cut radius at 19-20 meters so they make really nice big turns.

Off Pist: I tried to ski Big-Horn every time I went skiing, big horn is a single black diamond run but the first 30 yards or so are wicked steep.

Moguls/Trees etc.. not much progress probably my favorite areas to ski. I can go pretty fast through these areas without noticing how fast I’m going. Conditions are everything, good snow and it’s game on. I do not ski much off pist if it’s icy.

Highlights

Powder week 2020. Mid January brought cold weather and two weeks of continuous snow. I got in 3 days during this time and it was some of the best skiing I’ve had in my life. One day I was smoking knee deep pow runs until my body gave up.

Lowlights

Early closing due to corona virus. This effectively cut our season three weeks short for lift accessed skiing and also cut out our spring break week where I ski with the kids several days in a row....
